A book to look out for this month and one I've been longing to read for so long is my Bandita friend Kate Carlisle's debut HOMICIDE IN HARDCOVER. I love the sound of this mystery featuring rare book expert Brooklyn Wainwright and the sexy British undercover agent who makes her life difficult as she tries to solve a murder.  You can see a really great trailer for HOMICIDE IN HARDCOVER here.

For those of you on Facebook, the Romance Bandits now have our very own page here. Come and befriend us so you never miss out on what's going on in the Lair!

Thank you to the Roses Down Under, a readers group who meet at Rosemary's Romance Books in Brisbane City. They invited me to be their guest on Tuesday, 27th January, and I had a marvelous time talking to them about romance books of all varieties, including my new release.

I'd also like to give a huge thank you to Eloisa James and Julia Quinn who allowed me to take over a corner of their bulletin board for the entire month of January. I had an absolute ball and my gratitude goes out to all the wonderful people who made me feel so welcome there. Thanks also to my special guests Annie West, Christine Wells and Nicola Cornick who popped in to add a bit of sanity to the mayhem.

Some new bits and pieces on the website this month. Please check out the Articles page for my short story THE RETURN which was published in the Woman's Day here in Australia last November. While you're there, why not visit the dark side? Read my article about writing the black moment, Illuminating the Black Moment, which featured in January's Hearts Talk, the newsletter of Romance Writers of Australia.

My Favorite Things this month is another travel piece, this time on Morar and Mallaig in north-west Scotland. And if you haven't already entered my current contest, please check it out. It's a great prize. Five fantastic Aussie romances, including TEMPT THE DEVIL, as a grand prize and two consolation prizes of signed copies of TEMPT THE DEVIL.
I've saved one of my favorite reviews till last. Jennifer at Wild on Books gave TEMPT THE DEVIL five bookmarks and had this to say: "TEMPT THE DEVIL is a sensuous whirlwind of emotion set amidst the spectacle of Regency England.  Lovers of historical romance will be enticed by the theme, and the story itself will undoubtedly earn Anna Campbell a host of new fans while delighting her old fans."

On 18th December, I had the huge pleasure of joining with some Avon luminaries on Romance Radio to talk about Christmas celebrations. You can listen to the show here and find out just what Stephanie Laurens, Gayle Callen, Kathryn Caskie and Victoria Alexander  want from Santa!

Good news for UNTOUCHED which placed second in the historical section of the Lake Country Romance Writers prestigious Barclay Gold contest. Congratulations to all the winners and a special congratulations to my Bandita Buddy Donna MacMeans who tied for second place in the historical section with THE EDUCATION OF MRS. BRIMLEY. You'll find a list of the winners here.

If you live in Australia or New Zealand, keep an eye out for the mass market size paperback of UNTOUCHED which Avon Australia release this month. It should be available at KMart, Target, Big W and all good booksellers.

Some more fun stuff. I'm now on Facebook and MySpace and having a hoot linking up with everyone! I've also updated my HarperCollins author site with photos from the San Francisco RWA conference and also with my book covers. Pop over and check them out!

More fun towards the end of the month! From Monday, 26th January to Friday, 30th January, that rowdy bunch, the Romance Bandits will stage another raid on Romance Novel TV. You never know what will happen!

Another great contest for you, starting this month and running until the end of February. It's an Aussie book bonanza where the winner collects a bundle of books from authors Christine Wells, Paula Roe, Annie West and Bronwyn Jameson - oh, and me! There are two consolation prizes of signed copies of TEMPT THE DEVIL.

My Favorite Things this month talks about one of my favorite corners of England, a place that features strongly in TEMPT THE DEVIL.

As part of the promotion for these events, I was lucky enough to be featured on the front page of The Weekender magazine on 22nd January.  I enjoyed the interview which gave me a chance to disperse some of the persistent myths about romance readers and writers.

From Friday, 20th February, to Sunday, 22nd February, I'm attending the inaugural Australian Romance Readers Convention at the Jasper Hotel in Melbourne. I know the place will be packed with avid Aussie romance fans and international guests and I'm looking forward to meeting you all. I'll be around for the whole weekend but my 'official' duties include a panel on Saturday afternoon about historical heroes with wonderful authors Stephanie Laurens, Alison Stuart, Sara Bennett and Kinley MacGregor. New York Times  bestseller Stephanie Laurens will officially launch my third Avon release TEMPT THE DEVIL during the convention.
More TEMPT THE DEVIL news. The beautiful German edition VERBOTENE UMARMUNG from Blanvalet is out this month. And for Australian and New Zealand readers, the trade paperback should be available at booksellers everywhere from 1st February.

Great news about my book that's coming out at the end of October. It now has a title - CAPTIVE OF SIN. Isn't that great? Really evocative. Keep an eye on the website as November approaches for the cover and an excerpt.

Other good news in the last month, oui, oui, oui, is that CLAIMING THE COURTESAN has been bought by J'ai Lu in France. Verity is going to be Verité.

A couple of events to watch out for over the next few weeks. Sunshine Coast Libraries are going all out to celebrate Valentine's Day this year. There will be a plethora of events up and down the coast. Two I'm involved in are:

::March 2009

I have a title for my next book! It's out in November in the United States and it's called CAPTIVE OF SIN. Isn't that great? Please keep an eye out over coming months for a blurb, a cover and an excerpt. Not only do I have a title, I also have news that it's sold to AST in Russia. Huzzah!

Here's another fantastic review for TEMPT THE DEVIL, in fact two reviews for the price of one. My friends at the Romance Round Table had some very perceptive things to say about Olivia and Erith's love story.

There's another very nice review at singletitles.com which concludes:

  • "Anna Campbell is an amazing writer of historical romance who is at the height of her powers! Tempt the Devil is a sweeping romantic epic that dazzles with wry humor, dramatic intensity, brooding sensuality, sizzling love scenes and emotion so powerful that it will make readers cry buckets. Dark, sensuous and simply enthralling, Tempt the Devil is 24-carat historical romantic fiction at its most sublime!"

February has been a busy month in Campbellandia with lots of radio and press interviews. I'd particularly like to thank the staff at Sunshine Coast Libraries for setting up two great events, the High Tea with Anna Campbell at Lyn's Place in Minyama, and the workshop for beginner romance writers at Maroochydore Library. I'd also like to thank The Weekender for supporting the high tea and putting together some spectacular goodie bags. Thank you also to all the wonderful people who braved the sticky hot weather to attend!

Another huge event in February was the inaugural Australian Romance Readers Convention, ARRC09.  You'll notice various photos scattered around this edition of latest news and I think it's pretty obvious that ARRC was an absolute blast.

Everything kicked off on Friday night with a riotous welcome reception followed by a pajama party where everybody brought their teddies (of the fluffy kind) and talked about their favorite books. Saturday, the real business started. I moderated a panel on rakes and heroes in historicals and it was wonderful to speak to a packed room. I'm not surprised - I was wrangling Alison StuartStephanie Laurens and Sara Bennett. The consensus amongst us was that we write heroes and not rakes but that the word 'rake' sells books, hence its popularity in Romancelandia. A huge thrill for me was Saturday afternoon's launch of the Australian edition of TEMPT THE DEVIL. Stephanie Laurens did the honors - wow!

Saturday night was the gala dinner and awards presentation. I'm delighted to say the green monster, UNTOUCHED, won Favorite Historical Romance of 2008. Thank you to everyone who voted for me - you gave me a huge thrill! Congratulations to the other winners:
Sunday there were a few sore heads but still plenty of big smiles. I attended a panel on the future of romance and another on category romance featuring my wonderful critique partner Annie West. The conference ended with everyone agreeing it was an enormous success and that we wanted MORE!!!!! Thanks to the ARRC committee for all your hard work. It certainly paid off in spades.

A couple more snippets from ARRC. There was a silent auction for the Victorian bushfire victims and we raised over $7,000. Wow! Thank you to all the readers who came up to say how much you love my books. Honestly, that's better than chocolate! Also thank you to everyone who came to say hello at the various signings and get-togethers. It was such a treat to meet so many people who love romance books ALMOST as much as I do! ;-)

While I was in Melbourne, I took advantage of Annie West's presence to shout her lunch at one of my favorite restaurants to celebrate the acceptance of TEMPT THE DEVIL. As many of you know, we have this great scheme where whoever has sold a book takes the other one out for an extravagant lunch. Punch Lane is a fantastic, unpretentious bistro that serves brilliant food and has a wonderful cellar - and believe me, Annie and I took advantage of both. Another fun get-together was breakfast with Romance Writers of Australia members Josie Caporetto and Serena Tatti at Brunetti's in Fitzroy. Ooh, la la, the cakes!  Thanks also to everyone who turned up at my signing with Anne Gracie, Liz Maverick and Keri Arthur at Rendezvous Books on Monday. Lovely to catch up with you!

Make sure you check out the revamped Avon Authors site. It looks absolutely gorgeous and there's already great buzz in the forums and blogs. Watch for author interviews and exclusive competitions coming up.

Some books I'd like to bring to your attention this month include RITA-award winning Sophia Nash's latest instalment in her Widows' Club series, LOVE WITH THE PERFECT SCOUNDREL. This is Grace's story which I know we've all been waiting on since we first met her back in THE KISS.

My good friend Nicola Cornick also has a new historical romance out this month. It's called KIDNAPPED: HIS INNOCENT MISTRESS and it's set in the Scottish Highlands. I'm very much looking forward to this! Nicola and I regularly wax eloquent on the beauties of Scotland.

Great news in the Bandita lair! Romance Bandit Kate Carlisle has hit the New York Times list with her debut book, HOMICIDE IN HARDCOVER, which I mentioned last month. Congratulations, Kate! You're going to be a huge star!

New on the articles page is a short piece on contests which I wrote for the February edition of Hearts Talk, the newsletter of Romance Writers of Australia.

This month's contest is a doozey. Tell me your favorite historical romance and you could win a great historical romance pack which includes signed copies of UNMASKED by Nicola Cornick, THE TROUBLE WITH MOONLIGHT by Donna MacMeans, A NOTORIOUS WOMAN by Amanda McCabe and TEMPT THE DEVIL by Anna Campbell.

::January 2009

Happy New Year, everyone! May 2009 be happy, healthy and full of great books!

TEMPT THE DEVIL is now available in America! Huzzah! Here's the Amazon link if you can't find it in a bookshop near you!

Some amazing reviews have been coming in.  Joyfully Reviewed chose it as one of their recommended reads and said TEMPT THE DEVIL was "simply stunning."

Coffee Time Romance said this was, "A stirring romance, between two vibrant people, with an intensity that truly captures the reader, and holds until the last page in this sizzling read."

The Romance Reader awarded TEMPT THE DEVIL five hearts and ended with this: "I was so in love with this story, I read it in a day. I was even sad to see it end. TEMPT THE DEVIL brings a new love story, with realistic, fresh characters into print. For anyone who has been hurt by love, and desires a hopeful story to lift their spirits, this is a must read."

Night Owl Romance chose TEMPT THE DEVIL as a reviewer top pick and said Anna Campbell "create(s) spellbinding tales that I can't put down."

Fresh Fiction calls TEMPT THE DEVIL a "deeply intense and unforgettable story of human emotions." The review included this gem: "Ms. Campbell's tales stand out due to her ability to take readers into the depth and intensity of human emotion. Readers feel her characters' despair and their joy. She's an exceptional talent who pens unforgettable stories."

::April 2009

Happy Easter, everyone! I hope the bunny bounces by your place!

I’ve been very busy in my writer’s cave for most of March and I’m making great progress on the new story. I’m really enjoying getting to know these characters and then torturing them. Which reminds me of an old Spike Milligan joke when he made fun of a military recruitment poster: “Join the Army, Travel the World, Meet Interesting People! And then kill them!”

A couple of nice reviews for my books have popped up in the last month. There’s a lovely one of TEMPT THE DEVIL on Alaine’s Reading Blog.  There’s a great review of UNTOUCHED at Happily Forever After.

Also please check out an interview I did for a great site for writers called WritingRaw.com. Weeb asked some really interesting questions!

New on the website this month is an article on Point of View. This originally appeared (in German) in Love Letter Magazine then was reprinted in the Romance Writers of New Zealand newsletter, Heart to Heart.

For those who missed the Australian Romance Readers Convention in February (or for those who want to relive it), both the historical romance panel I participated in and my launch are now available as recordings on the Net.
Some books to look out for this month.  Firstly, a real treat for romance readers in America. My wonderful critique partner Annie West's THE DESERT KING'S PREGNANT BRIDE is out in the US this month. You’ll love this emotional, passionate story of two people who meet by chance and discover that they’re exactly where they need to be.

And we have a quartet of Romance Bandits books out in April to delight you.

Donna MacMeans’s third historical romance THE SEDUCTION OF A DUKE is out. This is a sequel to her sparkling multi-award winner THE SEDUCTION OF MRS. BRIMLEY.
Bandita Trish Milburn puts on her Tricia Mills hat when her first young adult novel HEARTBREAK RIVER hits the shelves this month. This sounds like a great story of courage and emotion!

One of the best writers around is Blaze author Tawny Weber. And I’m delighted to report her latest romance COMING ON STRONG was as good as all her other books. You’ll adore watching the sparks fly between Mitch Carter and Belle Forsham. Even better news, we only have to wait till May for the sequel GOING DOWN HARD to hit the shelves.

Beth Andrews’s debut romance for Harlequin SuperRomance, NOT WITHOUT HER FAMILY, was one of my favorite reads last year, smart, touching, true. The sequel A NOT-SO-PERFECT PAST is out this month. Whoo-hooo! Can’t wait to read it!
My Favorite Things this month continues March’s movie theme. I’m talking about the great LAST OF THE MOHICANS. And please check out my current contest which closes 30th April. One lucky person will win four great historical romances including TEMPT THE DEVIL.

::May 2009

Happy spring, my friends in the Northern Hemisphere. Happy autumn, my friends in the Southern Hemisphere. Must say autumn's my favorite season down here with one proviso - the swimming season is over. The water's just a bit too chilly just now for this little black duck!

May is Brenda Novak auction month. Every year, Brenda has a fantastic auction for readers and writers (and basically anyone, really, the prizes are fantastic and not all related to books) to raise money for research into juvenile diabetes. So far she's made over $500,000 for this worthy cause and this year should be her biggest ever. I'm offering a couple of prizes:

I'm also participating in a humungous Romance Bandits basket which is so great, it will make your eyes cross. At the time of writing this, the basket wasn't yet listed on the auction site (Brenda's been overwhelmed with goodies) but if you go to the Gift Baskets page and search on Romance Bandits, I'm sure you'll see it.

Bidding opens 1st May and closes 31st May. Good luck!

For those on Facebook, I'm spending a week as guest author from Monday, 27th April, on the discussion page at the Avon Romance Books Australian page, although we have fans all over the world. If you're not already a fan, why not join?

I've just done a major revamp of my HarperCollins Author site,  including new colors and updates to news, what's next, my bookshelf (keep hitting refresh to get the complete list!) and the timeline. Love the fresh look. Check it out. And remember, if you want current information about blogs, etc.,  that's a great place to look.

Speaking of site updates, make sure you check out the updated Romance Writers of Australia website which looks fantastic and now includes all sorts of great information about romance writing in Oz.

Something else to check out on the internet is the new Facebook Avon Fan Reading Group which got off to a huge start this month with Jenna Petersen talking about her new release THE NOTORIOUS VISCOUNT.  Lots of great authors lined up to take part. I'll be there talking about CAPTIVE OF SIN, my next release, in November.

If you want another sneak peek at TEMPT THE DEVIL, there's an excerpt up on Single Titles. Why not check it out?

Lots of good news to report. Firstly, I'd like to congratulate all the finalists in the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart and RITA Awards. You can see the full list here. A special shout-out to Golden Heart finalists, Bandita Kim Howe, who finaled twice in the Contemporary Series Romance Suspense/Adventure category and the Novel with Strong Romantic Elements category, and to Bandita buddy Pamela Bolton-Holifield/Louisa Cornell who finaled in the Regency History Romance category. My friend Vanessa Barneveld finaled in the Young Adult section with her wonderful manuscript "Call Me Crazy". Congratulations, V!

Also I'd like to congratulate Bandita RITA finalist, the fabulously talented Christine Wells whose THE DANGEROUS DUKE is a finalist in the RITA in the Best Regency Romance category. Other RITA congratulations go out to Aussies Stephanie Laurens (three finals!), Barbara Hannay, and Lilian Darcy. Also congratulations to the many Avon girls who got a mention, especially Bandita buddy Lorraine Heath  whose IN BED WITH THE DEVIL is nominated in the Best Historical Romance category. I look forward to cheering myself hoarse in Washington in July!

More congratulations are due to two wonderful Australian romance authors whose books regularly appear on this site as giveaways. Both Bronwyn Jameson and Annie West finaled in the Colorado Romance Writers Award of Excellence. Good luck to two fantastic reads, Bron's THE TYCOON'S ONE-NIGHT REVENGE and Annie's THE BILLIONAIRE'S BOUGHT MISTRESS.

More good news! I'm sure you've all noticed the new publicity photos on this site and wherever I've appeared on the web lately. They're the work of a very talented Caloundra photographer called Robyn Hills who has just won Photographic Artist of the Year at the Australian Professional Photography Qld Awards. Congratulations, Robyn. Well deserved!

A couple of books to look out for this month. GOING DOWN HARD, Tawny Weber's follow-up to the brilliant COMING ON STRONG, is out from Harlequin Blaze. Can't wait to find out what happens to Sierra and Reece! Another is by debut Aussie Regency historical writer, Beverley Eikli, whose first book is out in hardcover from Robert Hale in the U.K. I read LADY SARAH'S REDEMPTION in manuscript and said, "Dramatic, heartfelt and unusual! Eikli sweeps you away into a dangerous Regency world where only the most daring player wins love."   Finally, don't miss wonderful Aussie author Kelly Hunter's new U.S. release THE MAVERICK'S GREEK ISLAND MISTRESS. Kelly writes some of the best romance around, smart, funny, sexy, emotional.

Don't miss this month's contest which closes 31st May. It's my Devil, Desire and the Desert King contest. You can win Annie West's THE DESERT KING'S PREGNANT BRIDE, my TEMPT THE DEVIL and an advance reader copy of Pamela Palmer's DESIRE UNTAMED which doesn't hit the shops until 30th June. This is the first instalment in what promises to be a hugely successful series, THE FERAL WARRIORS.

My Favorite Things this month continues the movie theme I've followed lately. I'm talking about Howard Hawks's classic western RED RIVER.

::June 2009

Happy June, everyone! Although I'm sure my calendar is wrong. It can't be nearly halfway through the year! I feel like I was only writing Christmas cards a few weeks ago!

The big news in Campbellandia is that the green monster has been selected as a finalist in the Australian and New Zealand Romantic Book of the Year AwardUNTOUCHED has been chosen as part of the short list in the Long Romance category of the R*BY. The finalists featured in Woman's Day magazine and the winner will be announced at the big awards dinner at the Romance Writers of Australia conference in August. Congratulations to all you wonderful writers. Special congratulations go to my talented website designer, Paula Roe,  whose BOARDROOMS & A BILLIONAIRE HEIR finaled in the Short Sexy category. You can see the complete list of finalists here.

A few bits of nice news on foreign editions. First the great tidings that CAPTIVE OF SIN and my currently unnamed next release (well, it's named as it's currently in an unpolished first draft, but it's a name only a mother would love!) will be published by Blanvalet in Germany who did those beautiful editions of my first three books.

Other news is that May saw the release of my second Italian edition from Mondadori. UNTOUCHED has become SECRET HEARTS and it has a very hot cover. June sees my first release in Japan, a translation of CLAIMING THE COURTESAN from Futami-Shobo. It also sees my first release in Turkey, CLAIMING THE COURTESAN again.
A couple of very nice bits of coverage for TEMPT THE DEVIL this month. The first was a lovely review on Romantic Crush Junkies.  The second was a very complimentary mention on wonderful romance writer Pamela Clare's blog.

I'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who bid on items in the Brenda Novak auction that I talked about in Latest News last month. Your generosity and enthusiasm are fantastic. Congratulations to everyone who won the item they wanted, commiserations to those who missed out but thanks for trying. See you all next year!

For aspiring writers, especially those interested in category romance although my feeling is this would benefit anyone wanting to break into romance, check out the wonderful course that talented Harlequin author Carla Molino has written.  Carla has put together a wonderful program including input from bestselling romance authors who write both category and single title romance. I was proud and flattered when she asked me to contribute. The course is run through TAFE in Australia but as it's on CD, it's suitable for use overseas.
Some great books to watch out for. Readers in America now have the chance to pick up Annie West's spectacularly good THE GREEK'S CONVENIENT MISTRESS. This story is so emotional and passionate, I bet you're shedding a tear or two before you're done.

For historical romance fans, the next three months are going to be huge fun. Nicola Cornick's new series, THE BRIDES OF FORTUNE, is released back to back in June, July and August. I love Nicola's writing and I think she just gets better and better so I'm fanging for these books. The first is CONFESSIONS OF A DUCHESS which features characters we met in her sublime UNMASKED which was one of my reading highlights from 2008.

Another new historical from a really interesting debut author is A HINT OF WICKED by Jennifer Haymore which comes out on 1st June. Isn't that a gorgeous cover?

One of my favorite reads last year was Romance Bandit Jeanne Adams's debut romantic suspense DARK AND DANGEROUS. I'm delighted to let you know her second book is out in June. DARK AND DEADLY sounds like the same rollercoaster ride of danger and passion as her first book. Can't wait!

This month's contest talks about the sort of books they don't write any more and the prize is a great reading pack featuring your choice from my backlist, THE GUNSLINGER'S UNTAMED BRIDE by Stacey Kayne, CHRISTMAS PROPOSALS, just in time for Christmas in July - three great novellas by Carole Mortimer, Rebecca Winters and Marion Lennox and DOES SHE DARE? by Tawny WeberMy Favorite Things talks about my favorite Aussie movie STRICTLY BALLROOM.

::July 2009

Many people have asked about CAPTIVE OF SIN, released on 27th October, 2009. I'm delighted to say here's a sneak peak with the cover, the blurb and an excerpt. Aren't the cover and stepback just gorgeous?

I'd also like to apologise to readers in Japan. There's been a delay in the publication of CLAIMING THE COURTESAN there. I'll let you know a confirmed release date as soon as I have it.
As always, for updates on where and when I'm blogging, visit my HarperCollins author page.

I'm happy to announce there will be more gorgeous Australian trade paperbacks. Avon/HarperCollins in Sydney have contracted my next three books, starting with CAPTIVE OF SIN to be released in January, 2010. I love working with the local Avon girls so this instigated a huge happy dance in Campbellandia.

July is going to be such an exciting month for me. I'm off to the Romance Writers of America conference in Washington D.C. which is always a highlight of my year. I get to catch up with my friends, talk industry, meet readers, party till I drop. You get the picture! I'm looking forward to reporting back on the hijinks next month. In the meantime, best of luck to all my friends who have finaled in the Golden Heart and RITA awards. I'll be cheering my socks off for you.
There's some great books out in July, including two debuts for good friends of mine who write fantastic romance. The first is Aussie Sharon Archer's SINGLE FATHER: WIFE AND MOTHER WANTED for Mills & Boon Medical. Sharon's one of the nicest people I know and that warmth and wisdom and humanity is strongly reflected in this wonderful, heart-warming story.

My second recommendation this month is another good friend's debut romance. Kandy Shepherd's LOVE IS A FOUR LEGGED WORD is an absolute gem of a contemporary romance and is reminiscent of the screwball comedies of the 1940s while having a thoroughly modern, sexy sensibility. You'll love this, especially if you're a dog person!

Next is the start of a paranormal trilogy that's receiving back to back releases in July, August and September. DESIRE UNTAMED is the first in Pamela Palmer's amazing FERAL WARRIORS series about shapeshifters who hold the fate of the world in their (clawed) hands. DESIRE UNTAMED features a compelling hero and a nail-biting plot that will keep you riveted.

Finally (and from another friend and fellow Romance Bandit), I strongly recommend one of the best historical romances I've read in years, Christine Wells's WICKED LITTLE GAME. This is a passionate, emotional, heart-wrenching story that opens with the heroine's husband selling her to the hero for one night for 10,000 pounds. It only becomes more compelling from that attention-grabbing opening. You'll fall in love with the Marquess of Vane, just like Lady Sarah does - but you can't have him, he's mine! Ha!

My Favorite Things this month is about Rome, to give you all a break from the film reviews, and don't forget to check out my current contest where you can win a great reading pack, including a number of hard-to-find books.

::August 2009

This is a very jetlagged Anna writing this. I just got back from the Romance Writers of America conference in Washington D.C. where I had a fantastic time catching up with readers and my fellow writers. Thank you to everyone who came up to say hello and who bought a book at the literacy signing or picked one up at the Avon Open House. It's always such a buzz to meet you all. I really enjoyed visiting Washington too. What a gorgeous city and I love that all the museums are free. I definitely plan to come back one day.
As always, for updates on where and when I'm blogging, visit my HarperCollins author page.
I have a deadline at the end of the month, so not a lot of blogging this month. I'm only doing my two regular spots:

Me at the RWA literacy signing with fabulous historical romance author Nicola Cornick.
For those of you on Facebook, please check out the copious photos of me having a great time.

Congratulations to the finalists and winners of the Golden Heart and RITA Awards.  What an incredibly strong line-up there was this year. It was particularly wonderful to see fellow Aussie Stephanie Laurens  win her first RITA for her novella "The Fall of Rogue Gerard" from IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT. Stephanie has been a shining light of the industry and it was wonderful seeing her receive due recognition from her peers.
The highlight of the coming month will be the Romance Writers of Australia conference in Brisbane from 14th to 16th August. Congratulations to the organizers as the conference has sold out.

I'm really looking forward to seeing all my local writing friends and cheering on the contest winners, not to mention the finalists and winners in the Romantic Book of the Year Award and the Emerald Award for unpublished writers. I also look forward to presenting a check for $200 to the winner of the Anna Campbell Award for the best-placed historical in the Emerald (the prize includes a critique of a partial). Last year's inaugural winner was the talented Carolyn Comito and I'm sure this year's winner will be similarly impressive.

As many of you know, UNTOUCHED is a finalist in the Long Romance section of the R*BY so good luck, Green Monster!

Just one new book to tout this month. Many people have commented on how gorgeous my website is and most of the credit for that goes to my web designer, the brilliant Paula Roe. Paula's latest release from Silhouette Desire is out this week, THE MAGNATE'S BABY PROMISE. It sounds like a fabulous, passionate marriage of convenience story! Yum!

This month's My Favorite Things lets me rave about one of my favorite places in Washington D.C. I haunted the National Gallery of Art when I was there. It's a huge collection and more than you can see in one visit. They have an excellent gift shop where I spent up big on presents for people back in Australia.

I'm really excited about my contest this month. It only goes until the end of August so you'll need to get your skates on. You can win a signed ARC of my November release CAPTIVE OF SIN.  It's a really easy question too so have a go, you know you want to!

I'm delighted to say that UNTOUCHED is out in Turkey from Epsilon in the first week of August. CLAIMING THE COURTESAN will follow in October. Here is the gorgeous cover for UNTOUCHED. Isn't that color just beautiful?

I've also seen my beautiful Spanish cover for UNTOUCHED. It's out in September 2009 from Mondadori: Random House and apparently the title translates as "for the first time." Isn't that casual pose with the hand idly playing with the cane just the sexiest thing out? So classy!

And one more piece of news on foreign sales, the first three books, CLAIMING THE COURTESAN, UNTOUCHED and TEMPT THE DEVIL will all be coming out in Thailand from Crystal Publishing. How cool is that?

::September 2009

August and September are always busy months. This year, I also had a deadline on the 1st September so I've been writing madly in my cave in between kicking my heels up.

First of all some news on foreign releases. The Spanish language edition of UNTOUCHED, POR PRIMERA VEZ ("For The First Time"), is out this month from Random House Mondadori. Isn't this a beautiful cover? It's available from Amazon.  Other foreign edition news is that TEMPT THE DEVIL is going to Italy to follow up CLAIMING THE COURTESAN and UNTOUCHED. Grazie, Mondadori!

For those in South-East Queensland, the Brisbane Writers Festival is on again from Wednesday, 9th September, to Sunday, 13th September. This year, there's a real emphasis on romance. Christine Wells and I are doing another workshop and we're appearing on two panels. Romance-focused events include:

On Wednesday, 9th September, I'm really looking forward to being the speaker at the Women Meeting for Breakfast get-together at the Rustic Cabin in Caloundra. By the time I've finished, they'll all know more than they ever wanted to about romance writing!

I was delighted to see my short story "The Guardians" in the Woman's Day here in Australia on Monday, 24th August, as part of a report about the Romantic Book of the Year Awards in which UNTOUCHED finaled. Congratulations to all the R*BY winners, Marion Lennox (Short Sweet category), Trish Morey (Short Sexy category), Anne Gracie  (Long Romance category) and Suzanne Perazzini  (Romantic Elements).

From 14th to 16th August, I had a marvelous time at the annual conference for Romance Writers of Australia which took place at the Sebel and Citigate Hotel in Brisbane. It was one of the nicest, most relaxed conferences I've been to and it was wonderful to catch up with so many of my local writing friends. Highlights included an inspiring workshop on storytelling from Anne Gracie and keynote speaker Mary Jo Putney.  I participated in a fun panel on writing historical romance with Alison Stuart, Elizabeth Rolls and Mary Jo. There were fascinating sessions on a variety of topics from tax to brainstorming. The cocktail party had an Arabian Nights theme and it was fantastic to see the imagination people put into their costumes.

The climax of the conference is always the awards night. Congratulations to the R*BY winners (listed above) and the winners of the Emerald Award for an unpublished manuscript, A.J. MacPherson (single title) and Helen Lacey (series). And a huge congratulations to the winner of the Anna Campbell Award for the highest placing historical manuscript in the Emerald. I was delighted to present the very talented Amy Matthews from South Australia with a check for $200. Amy also receives a critique from me of the first three chapters and synopsis of her manuscript.

Another highlight was accepting the ROMA Award for Romance in the Media for the story The Weekender up here on the Sunshine Coast did about me back at the end of January. Congratulations to Lisa Chant and Michelle McLochlan who did such an amazing job on the profile.
Something to put in the diaries is my forthcoming visit to Blogtalk Radio where I'll be talking about my latest release CAPTIVE OF SIN.  I'll be there on Friday, 20th November at 8:00am, American EST.

Also for a bit of fun, why not visit the new Romance Writers of Australia blog? It's a great happening place to find out what's happening with Australian romance and romance writers.

Two new Bandita releases to keep an eye out for this month. The first is by one of my favorite writers, Tawny Weber.  Tawny's latest is called FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME and it's based around a high school reunion. Sounds great! The second is by Aunty Cindy, Loucinda McGary, and it's called THE TREASURES OF VENICE: A PASSION THEY NEVER EXPECTED AND A DANGER THEY CANNOT ESCAPE. With a title like that, how can you resist?

This month's contest continues through to the end of October and coincides with the release of CAPTIVE OF SIN.  I'm giving away four signed copies of my new release and it's a really easy question so good luck! My Favorite Things this month talks about some of the horse books I devoured when I was a little girl.
::October 2009

It's a really exciting month for me. On the 27th of October, my fourth Avon historical romance CAPTIVE OF SIN is released in North America. Huzzah!

I've already had two really great reviews for CAPTIVE OF SIN. The first comes from Publishers Weekly:
Lots of blogs this month leading up to the American release of CAPTIVE OF SIN on 27th October.
Campbell (Untouched) matches up two proud, wary victims of abuse in this smart Regency romance. Sir Gideon Trevithick, an English spy captured in India, was tortured for a year before rescuers brought him home as a national hero. After so long chained to his compatriots' corpses, he can't abide human touch, but he's still able to feel sympathy when he encounters battered Lady Charis Weston. She distrusts and despises men after being beaten by her greedy stepbrothers, who want to prevent her from inheriting a family fortune. Gideon tries to fight their growing attraction, believing the beautiful and warm Charis deserves better than a man so damaged by trauma and survivor's guilt, but Charis's clever plan to heal his wounded soul reveals delightful insight and leads to luscious love scenes. Readers will cheer for these lovable and well-crafted characters. (Nov.)
"Luscious love scenes"? I think I can live with that!

Romantic Times Book Reviews chose CAPTIVE OF SIN as a Top Pick for November and gave it 4.5 stars, their highest rating. The review starts:

Campbell holds readers captive with her highly intense, emotional, sizzling and dark romances. She instinctually knows how to play on her readers' fantasies to create a romantic, deep-sigh tale.

New on the website this month, make sure you check out the free short story "Lady Sarah and the Guardian" which was published in Woman's Day in August. It was such fun writing something a little lighter than my usual Regency noir!

I had a marvelous time at the Brisbane Writers Festival and I hope you enjoy these photographs. I'm putting an album up on my Facebook page so please come and check those out too. Thank you to everyone who came to the two panels and to the workshop. What a great turnout to support the romance genre!
BWF Escapism in Dark Times Panel (L-R): Anna Campbell, Allison Rushby, Kathy Wilson, Christine Wells

BWF Romancing the Tone Panel (L-R): Christine Wells, Anna Campbell, Bronwyn Parry, Glen Thomas
Thank you also to the lovely women who came to the business breakfast at the Rustic Cabin in Caloundra on Wednesday, 9th September. It was wonderful to meet you all and talk about the joys of romance fiction!

:: November 2009

Huzzah! The day has arrived. If you live in North America, CAPTIVE OF SIN is available at a bookseller near you! I loved writing Charis and Gideon's story and I hope you take those characters to your hearts!

I received a lovely surprise a couple of weeks ago when my friend Vanessa Barneveld sent me a trailer she'd put together for CAPTIVE OF SIN.  Isn't this gorgeous? Vanessa is a very talented writer who finaled in last year's Golden Heart contest - if she keeps this up, she might make it as a filmmaker as well!
I'm blogging in many places this month to celebrate the launch of CAPTIVE OF SIN.  I'm doing lots of giveaways so swing on by to join in the fun!
As always, for updates on where and when I'm blogging, visit my HarperCollins author page.
Another great review for CAPTIVE OF SIN appeared on Bookpage. Christie Ridgway said: "An emotional read about brave and loving characters, CAPTIVE OF SIN will bring sighs and smiles to readers looking for rich, historical drama." You can read the whole review here.

And Cybil Solyn really took CAPTIVE OF SIN to her heart, when she wasn't cursing the fact that the story kept her awake far too late. Curses which are always music to a writer's heart! She called it "an amazing read." You can see the whole review here.

Strictly Reviews gave CAPTIVE OF SIN five stars and said: "This has to be one of the best historical romances I have read so far. It had all the drama, angst and just the right of amount of action to keep me thoroughly captivated from the very first page. I couldn't put it down. I became like a woman obsessed. However, I do have a warning for you all. You must have a box of tissues handy."

My Overstuffed Bookshelf gave CAPTIVE OF SIN five flames (Outstanding Book That Will Stay On My Bookshelf For Rereading!) and said: "A book that captures true romance and enough intrigue to keep me up all night reading. Ms. Campbell has now shown me the wonderful world of historical fiction. I am now hooked on finding more books from this author."

The Australian trade paperback edition of CAPTIVE OF SIN will be out in mid-December. Check out the spectacular cover! I can't wait to to see that at my nearest bookstore.

More news on CAPTIVE OF SIN. Epsilon in Turkey has bought the rights to my fourth book and it should be out there some time next year.

Also if you're in Norway, please keep an eye out for the Schibsted edition of CLAIMING THE COURTESAN this month.

A phoenix out of the ashes! Sadly, one of my favorite sites, Romance Novel TV, no more. Maria and Marisa were fantastic ambassadors for romance and were always incredibly supportive to me. Now PJ, Gannon, Andrea and Buffie from that site have set up a fantastic new destination for romance readers, The Romance Dish.  I'm really excited that I'll be continuing my regular monthly reviews, mostly of romance classics, there on the 24th of each month.

Don't forget to tune in to Romance Radio on Friday, 20th November
at 8am, to hear me talk about CAPTIVE OF SIN!

This month's My Favorite Things has some happy snaps from the recent Romance Writers of America conference. And make sure you check out the latest contest too. Tell me about your New Year's resolutions and you could win one of two prize packs. Both include a signed copy of CAPTIVE OF SIN and a couple of wonderful books from my prize cupboard. A little bit of a mystery goody haul to start the year!

:: December 2009

How can it be December already? Wasn't Easter last week?

I'll start with some great news about CAPTIVE OF SIN.  I was incredibly excited to discover that COS featured in prestigious industry journal Publishers Weekly's top 100 books of the year, one of only five mass market paperbacks to make the list. The article says, "Campbell pulls out all the stops with this heart-wrenching historical romance. A hastily wed heiress must help her husband, a war hero, recover from post-traumatic stress that leaves him unable to bear human touch." You can see the complete list of the 100 best books of 2009 here.
  • Monday, 7th December - Annie West is my guest on Romance Bandits. She'll talk about her new American release BLACKMAILED BRIDE, INEXPERIENCED WIFE and do a giveaway!
  • Thursday, 10th December - my regular spot on Romance Bandits
  • Friday, 11th December - my regular spot on Tote Bags 'n' Blogs
  • Thursday, 24th December - I'm reviewing Georgette Heyer's DEVIL'S CUB for The Romance Dish
After the wild forays into Bloglandia of the last weeks, this month it's a lot quieter. Phew!
As always, for updates on where and when I'm blogging, visit my HarperCollins author page.
A couple of days after that, I read the kind of review you dream about. Rose Fox, who reviews popular fiction for Publishers Weekly, blogged about CAPTIVE OF SIN. Here's an excerpt:

  • "Well, let me tell you internets, if anyone tells you that romance novels are all escapist crap, you hand them a copy of this book and tell them that underneath the salacious cover is an incredible story about war and pain and PTSD and kindness and compassion and love. I should have been working for the last three hours, and instead I was completely caught up in the story; why spin that as a cowardly dash into a fantasy world when even big-name reviewers writing at major publications aren't afraid to say "It grabbed me from the first page" and "I couldn't put it down"? And when I did put it down, because I'd finished it, I didn't sigh with wistful longing to return to that romantic setting, I sighed with wistful longing because I wanted to launch myself at my husband and he had already gone to bed. It doesn't get much more real-world than that."
In fact, to my vast satisfaction, good reviews have been flooding in for CAPTIVE OF SIN:

  • The Romance Reader says, "Get ready because CAPTIVE OF SIN is an unforgettable, gorgeous novel that is the best story, with the most captivating hero that I have read this year."
  • Angela Arno at Romance Reader at Heart  loved CAPTIVE OF SIN and says, "CAPTIVE OF SIN was so captivating that I finished it all in one day. I would read this book over and over, and it's a shelf keeper, for sure. I'm totally sold on this novel. CAPTIVE OF SIN is a winner!"
  • Tammy Faris at the Romance Readers Connection says, "Anna Campbell captures her audience from the very first page!  CAPTIVE OF SIN is fast paced and I promise that you will NOT put it down!  The descriptive writing talents of Ms. Campbell makes the reader feel like they are right there with Gideon and Charis watching everything take place.  This is the first novel of Ms. Campbell's that I have read but I promise I will be heading right out to purchase her others and I suggest you do the same!"
  • Melanie Murray on Romance by the Blog says, "Anna Campbell creates a heart wrenching story that pits Charis' youthful belief in love against Gideon's jaded lack of hope. And the result is an emotionally satisfying, sensual push-and-pull between two headstrong characters you can't help but root for."
  • Suan Wilson at Fresh Fiction CAPTIVE OF SIN "an emotional and beautifully uplifting Regency romance with wonderful characterization." Suan goes on to say, "Ms. Campbell understands the workings and emotions of the soul and beautifully captures it with her writings. She draws readers into the characters' intense level of emotional despair and into their gradual ascent into healing, hope and love.
  • You can find a really nice review from a writer's viewpoint at Pamela Clare's blog and another great five star review at Once Upon a Romance.
Still on the subject of reviews, but for older books, check out this wonderful five star review of UNTOUCHED at Heather's Reading Romance.  And Christine Morehouse of Romantic Crush Junkies gave five heart reviews to CLAIMING THE COURTESANUNTOUCHED and TEMPT THE DEVIL as part of my great week visiting her site. Thank you, Christine!

Aussie and New Zealand readers have the chance this month (around the 17th December) to pick up the gorgeous trade paperback edition of CAPTIVE OF SIN. It should be available in all good bookstores, including Target, Big W and KMart. Here's a photo of my good friend, Medical author Sharon Archer, holding up an advance copy which fortuitously arrived during her recent visit.

December is a big month for foreign editions of CLAIMING THE COURTESAN. Both Schibsted in Norway and Futami-Shobo in Japan are releasing their translations. I haven't seen a hard copy of the Norwegian edition, although the cover is spectacular. But the Japanese books arrived a couple of days ago and they're absolutely gorgeous. One of my favorite editions ever.

At the moment, I'm busily writing a long short story, almost a mini novella, for THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF REGENCY ROMANCE which should be out next year. I'll keep you posted. I've never written a reunion romance before so I'm having huge fun with these characters. Check out the other MAMMOTH anthologies!
Sharon was smart enough to bring her camera so I hope you enjoy the photos of her visit. I'll be featuring more in my blog for the Romance Bandits on 10th December. Right on Sharon's heels, I had a wonderful weekend with Medical writer Amy Andrews, Harlequin Presents writer Trish Morey and Desire and Harlequin Presents writer Robyn Grady.  Oh, dear, my aching head! Too much partying isn't great for my liver either!

If you live in North America, a great book to look out for is BLACKMAILED BRIDE, INEXPERIENCED WIFE by Harlequin Presents author Annie West. You'll be hooked by this passionate tale of two wary people who enter into a marriage of convenience and find so much more than either bargained for. I love marriage of convenience stories and this one's a doozy!

There are more happy snaps in this month's My Favorite Things which includes pictures from a couple of Australian events in the last year or so. And don't forget to enter the great New Year's Resolution Contest where there are TWO prizes up for grabs, both mystery parcels of signed books including signed copies of CAPTIVE OF SIN.

I'd like to close by thanking you for your amazing support this year and especially to all those people who took the trouble to contact me personally to say how much you enjoyed reading my books. Those emails mean a lot to me and I treasure all your messages. I wish everyone a very happy and safe Holiday Season!
Don't forget to explore the amazing new romance site, The Romance Dish. My latest review, of Georgette Heyer's immortal DEVIL'S CUB goes up there 24th December but there's always something exciting happening there so swing by if you can.

November has been a really busy month for visits from writing friends, always something I enjoy! I had a marvelous weekend with historical author Christine Wells and erotic fantasy writer Denise Rossetti.  Then one of my dearest friends, Mills & Boon Medical writer Sharon Archer came up for a few days.

::February 2009

Hi everyone! Happy February! Lots to get through this month so grab that cup of tea or coffee!

Firstly I'd like to thank all the people who have emailed me to say how much you've loved reading TEMPT THE DEVIL. I'm proud and humbled - and very happy. One of my favorite comments was actually on Facebook. Melinda from Oregon said:

"Anna, I am thoroughly enjoying TEMPT THE DEVIL. Reading your books is like being outside in a thunderstorm - atmospheric, electric, frightening, and extremely, wildly beautiful."

Since I last posted, we've had more good reviews. Lucy Abarcia, in her Ever After Romance Books newsletter, called  TEMPT THE DEVIL "simply beautiful."  Margaret in her Intrigue Romance Books January catalogue says TEMPT THE DEVIL "will pull you in and not let go till the end."

New York Times bestseller Eloisa James gave TEMPT THE DEVIL a great review in her column at Barnes & Noble.  She finished her remarks with, "Don't miss this novel -- it speaks to the wild drama of the heart."

Anthonette Dotson at Romance Reviews Today also really liked TEMPT THE DEVIL. Her comments ended:

"TEMPT THE DEVIL is a tale about the joining of two people who still hold festering wounds from their pasts but find redemption in each other's arms.  Erith and Olivia's story is a passionately sizzling romance that will have readers cheering for their happy ending."

Stacy's Place on Earth gave TEMPT THE DEVIL five stars out of five and said it was "a complex and intensely emotional love story that will stay with you long after you close the book." Angie at Bookishly Attentive gave TEMPT THE DEVIL  a lovely review and said, "This story of love above all costs is so beautiful!"

One of my favorites so far is Marisa's five star review on Romance Novel TV where she says she's already chosen TEMPT THE DEVIL as one of her 2009 top picks.  Not bad in January! The review starts:

"Every once in a while you read a book that transports you. After reading TEMPT THE DEVIL I was transported, but I also had a period of mourning. It was hard for me to read another book because this one stayed with me long after I closed the last page. The prose, the characters, the dialogue, the ambiance is magic woven together in a seamless and masterful way. Anna Campbell is a virtuoso with words - and the words come together bringing incandescent and vivid images that create a sumptuous world that keeps you feasting for hours."
